MEMORY QUILTS ~ Updated 10-26-08

At this time, I am not taking any orders for commissioned quilts, either memory or t-shirt. If you have a quilt top that needs allover quilting, and binding, I would be happy to schedule you in 2009.

NOTE: To view photographs of some of the quilts I've completed, please visit my Webshots Photo Album. (Link will open in a new browser window.)

While many of us enjoy designing and piecing a quilt top, the thought of wrestling your quilt "sandwich" through a household sewing machine can stop you cold. So the quilt tops keep stacking up, waiting to be finished.

Maybe you are a hand quilter, but your back and knees can't take basting a quilt on the floor any longer.

West Branch Studio will transform your unfinished quilt tops into finished works of art. We also can take the physical burden of basting away, leaving you to do what you love, hand quilting.

All this is done with quality and care. We love quilting and it shows.

Please see our Preparation Tips for Longarm Quilting Customers for more information.

Quilting/Basting Services

Quilting prices are per square inch. For example, a 70" x 90" quilt = 6,300 square inches. Basting a quilt of this size at .008 per square inch would cost $50.40.

All services have a minimum charge of $40.

Type of QuiltingPrice Per Square Inch**
Basting.008
Large Meander/Allover.015
Pantograph patterns (edge to edge).02
Custom.035 and up

**Prices subject to change without notice.

Basting: Great service for the person who prefers to hand quilt. Saves your knees and back, unless you like crawling around on the floor! Parallel rows of long basting stitches, placed 4-5" apart, secure your quilt layers.

Large Allover: Features a large allover meandering or other simple freehand design. Space between quilting is orange or fist sized. Please note this is the only type of quilting I recommend for t-shirt quilts in order to avoid the bulky block intersections. Placing a large freehand star in each block is another example.

Pantograph Patterns: Edge to edge quilting using a detailed, interlocking pantograph pattern.

Custom: Many traditional quilting designs including stitch in the ditch (SID), cross hatching, setting a design on each block, some small stippling, outlining of motifs, more detailed freehand designs, and separate border treatments.

Batting

You may supply your own batting or purchase it from West Branch Studio. Please note we do not accept Mountain Mist batting or other thin, un-bonded battings that are fragile and therefore not suited for use on a longarm quilting machine.

If you would like us to carry a specific batting type or brand, please let us know!

If you do wish to supply your own batting, it must be at least 5" longer and wider than the quilt top, in order to attach the batting to the quilt frame.

Backing

If you wish to supply the backing fabric for your quilt, please purchase 100% cotton premium quilting fabric or muslin. These are available from fabric shops online or at a quality local quilt shop. There will be an additional labor charge of $20 an hour for pre-washing, piecing, pressing and squaring the backing fabric.

The supplied backing must be at least 5 " longer and wider than the quilt top, in order to attach the backing to the quilt frame. This means if your quilt top is 80" x 80" you need to supply a backing that is at least 90" x 90."

Please see our Preparation Tips for Longarm Quilting Customers for more information.

Thread

There will be a small charge for thread depending on the type of thread chosen and the size (in square inches) of the quilt. This will be included on your Work Order and Estimate form. I offer a variety of colors in Signature 100% cotton, Perma-Core (poly-wrapped poly), monofilament, variegated, and other specialty threads. If I don't have it, I can order it!

Thread changes are $2 each.

Miscellaneous Labor Charges

Please make sure your quilt top and backing are pressed well so that all seams lie flat. Clip all stray threads. Double check to make sure the backing and quilt top are square. Any additional labor needed for pressing, clipping, squaring, seaming and preparation of the backing material, or seam repairs will be charged at $20 per hour. For more information please see Preparation Tips for Longarm Quilting Customers. You may also want to check out How to apply quilt borders that lay flat.

Binding

Binding ServicePrice Per Linear Inch**
Prepare double thickness straight binding from customer fabric (please note the regular labor rate of $20 an hour will apply to making BIAS binding) Included in binding price
Machine apply binding to front of quilt and leave for customer to hand turn.10 per linear inch
Machine apply binding to quilt front, hand turn and slip stitch to back of quilt .25 per linear inch

**Prices subject to change without notice.

Calculating the total linear inches is easy. For example, a 70" x 90" quilt would have 320 linear inches of edge (70" + 70" + 90" + 90" = 320"). If you are unsure, I can help you calculate how much yardage to supply for the binding. Most often, this would be about one yard of 100% cotton fabric.

Shipping

If shipping is necessary, I use Federal Express Home, Ground or Overnight services. I strongly recommend full insurance for the shipment.
